Sustainability

There are now 416 parts per million of carbon dioxide (Co2) found in our atmosphere as of May 2020. It is the highest it has been in human history. The average global temperatures in2019 were 1°C warmer than the 20thcentury average. According to NASA, it marks the end of the warmest decade on record.

8 MILLION TONNES

This is the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans and water systems each year. This is severely affecting the earth's long term sustainability.

WHAT IS AVONCOURT DOING?

Avoncourt have identified the need for a sustainable plastic packaging product that can reduce Co2 emissions and plastic ocean waste. Below are 3 key areas we focus on. These have allowed us to continue providing our customers with low carbon packaging, the necessary information and technical knowledge to reduce their, and that of their customers, Co2 emissions.

Avoncourt sources bottle flake from ocean bound sources. The bottle flake is100% recycled and makes our products manufactured with this flake one of the lowest in terms of co2 emissions, even compared to cardboard packaging. This has helped us reduce our co2 emissions over time and helped reduce ocean bound waste.

This bottle flake is from

  • aggregate sites within 50km of a major waterway or ocean
  • the country or region lacks waste management infrastructure & collection incentives and is

  • independently certified as ‘risk to ocean waste’
  • Avoncourt currently sources 50% flake from ocean bound sources. We currently convert around 8.5 Million pet water/coke bottles each week into material rolls to be used in the production of our trays.

In august 2020 Avoncourt installed 11kw of solar panels, we also have planning approval for a further 140kw that will be installed in July 2021, saving over 200 tonnes of co 2 per annum. Phase 3 is currently in planning for the extrusion area and will be a further 350kw installation during the course of 2022.

Avoncourt acquired land to plant trees in west cork and Galway to help us reduce our carbon footprint, this process is called co2 sequestering and is based on the UK woodland carbon code. In April 2021 Avoncourt planted 26,700 trees in west cork and this site is 12.29 hectares in size. This will absorb 70 tonnes per annum over a 35 year growth cycle. Our Galway site was approved in June 2021 and this will add a further 11 hectares and absorb an additional 63 tonnes of co2 per annum.
